PH.D. RULES AND REGULATIONS (English Summary)
General
- Each Ph.D. candidate is assigned to a PhD supervisor, who is a faculty member of the department, and to a 3-person advisory committee. The committee is headed by the supervisor, and may comprise one faculty member outside the department.
- The length of study is at least 3 years and at most 5 years, of full-time study. Within the first 1,5 years, the student is strongly advised to present a description of his/her PhD thesis to the advisory committee.
- Once the PhD is completed and accepted by the advisory committee, the latter proposes to the Department a 7-person examination committee. The Department appoints the examination committee, and the candidate defends orally his/her PhD work to this committee.
Qualifications
- A Master’s or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field is usually required, obtained from a University recognized by the Greek Ministry of Education.
- If the candidate has no (relevant) Master’s degree, or if it is deemed that his/her background is not sufficient, he/she will have to pass a number of graduate courses corresponding to up to 28 units (about 7 courses). All PhD students have the right to attend any grad course offered in the Department.
- Proficiency in English is required. Any other language is a plus.
Financial matters
- PhD study in the University of Athens is free, but PhD candidates must provide service to the Department for 6 semesters, e.g. as Teaching, Lab or Research assistants. They must also help supervise final exams during the entire length of their studies (about 4 per year).
Application Procedure
- Application procedure: The application is comprised of a complete CV, including a list of courses with grades, a statement of purpose, any academic publications including the Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis, and reference letters from at least two faculty members (or equivalent). An oral interview may be required.
